Mobile Phone use impacting Babys health

20-May 2008: A new Study by the universities of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Aarhus, Denmark which is to be published in the July issue of the journal Epidemiology; has shown that women who use mobile phones while pregnant are more likely to give birth to children with behavioral problems. The research found after surveying 13,000 children that using handsets just two or three times a day, was sufficient to impact the health | |
| of the baby, and raise the risk of the baby developing hyperactivity and difficulties with behavior, emotions and relationships by the time the child has reached school age.The Study found that mothers who used mobile phone handsets were 54 per cent more likely to have children with behavioral problems and that the likelihood increased with the amount of potential exposure to the Mobile Phone radiation. And when the children also later used the phones they were, overall, 80 per cent more likely to suffer from difficulties with behavior.
The Scientists stated the results were not expected, and that they were not aware of any biological mechanisms which could account for the findings(impacting baby and children’s health). When the researchers attempted to explain the link through other mechanisms such as smoking during pregnancy, family psychiatric history or socio-economic status, the scientist found the link was stronger impacting the baby’s health even more. The researchers added that there could be other possible explanations, such that mother who used their mobile phones more frequently may pay less attentions to their children.. Pointed out in the Daily Mail article “…Radiation from mobile phones is thought to penetrate only one or two centimeters into the skin and not to reach the unborn child. But previous studies have shown it can affect levels of melatonin, a sleep- controlling hormone that mothers pass to unborn babies through the placenta…” Today it now seems so important to answer a mobile phone call immediately, even when we are at home we reach for that mobile phone to call a friend. We have been told by the mobile phone companies that the radiation level is so low that it cannot possibly impact our health. This does not explain why some people when they have a mobile phone in their jeans pocket, then their leg feels warm where the mobile phone was resting. Large corporations have a vested interest in saying there is no link to mobile phone radiation and when it comes to babies, should we really be taking any chances. This is not something we can legislate against but we should use common sense and be a responsible parent. Unlike the case in Australia where new safety standards have been written to taken into account a mother who turned her back on a baby in a pram for several minutes to answer a mobile phone call and a tragedy happened.. The conclusion by the ACCC was to introduce a new mandatory safety standard to have brakes on prams to be red and that there be a tether strap. Similarly children need our love and attention and they are only young for a very short time so do not answer that mobile phone, but leave the mobile phone at home and take your child to a playground.. hop on the swing and live… Our parents survived without the need to be contacted while out walking.. people simply called later at home…. Common sense and responsible parenting needs to prevail…. References |

I am hoping that with the downturn in the economy that parents will return to be more responsible and to realise they do not need all their material possession and as such our children will thrive
